WSO100 Masthead Example – Comprehensive System

Overview

This comprehensive wind and weather system includes Maretron’s WSO100, which provides five basic weather parameters

  • apparent wind speed
  • apparent wind angle
  • barometric pressure
  • humidity
  • outside air temperature

The display also computes the wind chill factor (given wind speed and air temperature), heat index (given outside air temperature and humidity), and dew point (given outside air temperature and humidity). By adding the GPS antenna/receiver (GPS200) and compass (SSC300) to this system, the true wind speed and direction can be calculated within the display given the boat Speed Over Ground (SOG). Note that the true wind will be referenced to the boats ground speed and not the boats water speed. If it is desired to have true wind speed reference to the boat Speed Through Water (STW), then you should consider the WSO100 intermediate system example, or add a DST110 to this design.

This system has the NMEA 2000 network terminated at the masthead using an inline terminator installed directly to the bottom of the WSO100. Normally, an NMEA 2000 network is terminated at one end of the vessel but since the WSO100 is mounted more than 20 feet from the trunk or backbone, the network needs to be terminated at the masthead.

The following table shows the products included within this example system plus a list of the information or data available for display.

Product Description Available Data List
DSM250 Display Displays data in this list, monitors the data and sounds an internal buzzer if there is a problem
WSO100 Wind Weather Station Measures apparent wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, humidity, outside temperature, wind chill factor, heat index, and dew point.
GPS200 Cabin top GPS Position, speed over ground, course over ground, time, date, magnetic variation and more
SSC300 Compass Monitors magnetic heading, rate of turn and pitch and roll
